CARBON FOOTPRINT DOWN?

In an attempt to reduce our very modest footprint we have audited the business and identified two areas where we can make improvements:
REFRIGERATION – we run three chiller units and two freezer units which are on for 24 hours a day (of course). Despite only using 100% renewable electricity, we have identified a product that not only makes cost savings but also reduces the wear and tear on the equipment by making it work not quite so hard.
The E-Cube is a clever little device that measures the temperature of the actual food and not the air around the food. This means that when customers open the door and the temperature drops a little, the fridge/freezer no longer springs into action every time. After all, it’s the temperature of the food that’s important, and this is less susceptible to fluctuation than the air around it. The E-Cube has been shown to produce running cost savings of up to 30% - and as we spend almost £2,000 a year on electricity, a 30% saving would be most welcome. In terms of wear and tear, we have just had a new fan fitted to on of the freezers at the cost of over £150 – that would have paid for three cubes to be fitted!
LIGHTING – we (rather foolishly) installed downlights when we refurbished the shop three years ago and these are rather costly in energy terms. Thankfully there is now a low energy alternative that uses a fraction of the energy of the current halogen bulbs and last an awful lot longer.
We plan to make these improvements by the end of July – hopefully the next quarter’s leccy bill will likewise see an improvement….
NEW LEAFLETS COMING
We originally produced two leaflets, one for the shop as a whole and one for the deli. Much has changed since then and these leaflets are in real need of updating. We also haven’t had any to distribute for well over a year now.
The latest is that the wording and layout is being finalised as we speak (well, type), and the new leaflets should be ready by the end of July.
NEW LEAFLET HERE NOW!!
We are part of a group of shops long-windedly called The Yards and South Street Tenants Association (TYASSTA) which aims to promote the area as an attractive place to come and shop. There are 16 shops in total and 11 of these have funded the production of a full colour leaflet detailing the shops together with a little bit about the history of The Yards. These leaflets are available in most of the 16 shops and also in the tourist information centre. The aim now is to get the remaining 9,500 leaflets distributed further afield!
